Former England defender Gary Neville believes Harry Kane’s subdued performances against Croatia and Sweden was due to him carrying an injury.

Kane started the World Cup in brilliant fashion, bagging five goals in the opening two games, but couldn’t prevent the 2-1 defeat to Croatia on Wednesday night.

However, despite a penalty against Colombia, the Spurs striker has appeared away from his brilliant best, and Neville thinks that’s due to not being 100 percent fit.

‘I’d be amazed if he hadn’t been carrying an injury since the Colombia game,’ Neville said on ITV after the game.

‘Against Sweden he was static. I’d be amazed if he doesn’t come out and something emerges about his fitness. He’s just not been there.’

Kane remains the leading top scorer in the World Cup on six goals, with Romelu Lukaku the closest challenger on four.

Both players have one more game left in the competition in Saturday’s third place play-off match between England and Belgium.
